December 11th, 2009Looking To Expand My Horizons

Over the last few years or so I have started to feel more and more that my brain is sort of turning to mush. Well, maybe that’s not a pretty way to put it but as I am not learning as many new things anymore (which is natural as I am out of college now), I feel that I am taking a step back intellectually. This is also likely amplified because my job is quite routine and doesn’t allow for many educational opportunities.

For these reasons, I have taken it upon myself to expand my horizons and continue my education out of the classroom. I plan to do this by travelling to new cities and historical sites, such as Washington DC. I have heard good things about some of the available educational tours DC, and would love to enjoy a bus tour of the area while a knowledgeable operator explains the importance of various landmarks. I’m sure that such a tour would be very intellectually as well as visually stimulating, and help to satisfy my craving to learn new things. If any of you have taken such a tour, I would love to hear about your experience, so feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an email.

December 11th, 2009We Need A Plumber!

What a morning! Not only is it freezing cold outside and no matter what I do we wake up to a chilly house, but we’re having some plumbing issues as well. I’ll be honest, I know absolutely nothing about plumbing which is usually find as if we have a problem my husband can usually solve it (he’s quite handy), however he’s gone on business for a week, so I will have to find a plumbing company to help.

The problem is actually two fold, one issue is that the upstairs toilet appears to be leaking a small amount of water when it’s flushed, and so I am not letting anyone use that toilet. Of course, that means that the kids are using my bathroom (we only have two in the house) and are of course fighting over it. Also, the hot water is taking a very long time to heat up, and really is only getting warm at best. I like to take hot showers so that’s very inconvenient to me. I’ve been looking up plumbers online, and there I found one called Germantown plumbing that seems good, so maybe I’ll give them a call. I just hope that I can find a company that will be able to assist right away, as having plumbing issues is no fun!

December 11th, 2009Healthy Snacks For The Kids

Last night I watched a special that talked about the dangers of childhood obesity, and how important it is that our kids remain a healthy weight. Children who are overweight often remain overweight as adults, and are prone to develop conditions like diabetes and heart problems. Now while my children aren’t overweight, the show really got me thinking about the different foods that I feed them, and wondering if I am setting the best possible example in terms of teaching them healthy eating habits.

So, I decided that while they will still be allowed occasional treats like chocolates, candies and cookies, they should also get used to eating healthier snacks more often. The usually eat very healthy at home, but the snacks I pack in with their lunch could be healthier. Some things that I will start sending them more often include items like veggies and dip, fruit and nut trail mix and raw fruits. I guess the only problem is that while these are all things they like, it might be tempting for them to trade some of their items for the more sugary snacks that their friends bring. Oh well, that’s probably inevitable, but hopefully it won’t happen too often…

December 10th, 2009Planning My Dream Bathroom

As some of you may know, my husband and I are currently planning to do some home renovations, as the are very needed and frankly we deserve some nice new upgrades. We aren’t planning to do the entire home, but rather are focusing on our en suite bathroom, as it could use some new tile flooring and an upgrade to the counter tops.

While my husband only wants to do a few upgrades, I secretly dream about turning it into my dream bathroom, with huge mirrors for doing make up and, of course, great lighting. If I get my way I’d like to make some dramatic improvements to the area, and maybe even install a Ariel steam shower. Have you seen those showers? They’re nothing like my current shower, as they’re super luxurious and you can even use them for aromatherapy. Heck, the latest steam showers even have ipod connections and benches! Owning one would be like a spa experience in my home, which would be very neat.

Anyhow, we are still in the planning stages so we’ll see what I can talk my dear husband into, but I sure hope he comes around and agrees to totally redo the entire bathroom, as I’m totally picturing it now.

December 10th, 2009Some Thoughts About Steel

You know, a while ago my family and I were talking about the different kind of jobs that people used to have decades ago, and we realized that a lot of folks had manufacturing jobs, as opposed to the office jobs that most people seem to have now days. Of course there are still many manufacturing jobs today (although unfortunately a lot of those  jobs have also gone overseas), however it seemed to be more common to work in a manufacturing  sector in decades past. In fact, I learned a good deal of my uncles had worked in the steel industry, and so since them I have been more interested in products that are made of steel (which of course are numerous), as well as the industry itself.

Also, I’ve been trying to buy more products that are made in North America, and it’s nice to know that many steel products are still produced here. Whether I need a steel product like coated crawfish wire, or a perforated steel or expanded metal steel product, I always look to buy it locally when possible. I think that whether you need steel products for your business needs or other, you should try to buy as locally as possible as doing so supports the economy and helps the environment.

December 10th, 2009Looking At Mantle Clocks

This morning I have spent a fair bit of time looking at various wall, mantle and grandfather clocks online, as I hope to find one that would be perfect for my home. I want something that would go well with my current decor, and of course is not too large for the spot that it will go. While I have been looking at various types of clocks, I am specifically looking for a mantle clock, as I picture it being placed (or featured, rather) on a lovely shelf that I have in the living room. While there are a good variety of new mantle clocks when I see the perfect one for my home, I think I’ll know it right away. The clock I have in mind will look similar to one that my sister owns (of which I admire), however not too similar as our home decor is quite different from each others.

The internet is a great place to shop for mantle clocks, as there is such a great variety to be found. I especially find the www.1-800-4clocks.com website useful because it has not only a huge selection of clocks, but is also very easy to use. The website also has an excellent clock blog, where you can read more about clock warranties and more. It’s a useful site so check it out if you’re seeking a new mantle or grandfather clock.

December 10th, 2009Thoughts Of Work

I am so tired! You see, I have been putting in a lot of hours at work, as the holiday season is very busy for us (the busiest time all year), and it’s very exhausting. My work week has gone from around thirty five hours to over fifty! Unfortunately that amount of work makes me a bit irritable and it’s hard to keep it from showing… but of course I do, as my family deserves to have a great holiday season and soon my work schedule will go back to normal. Also, soon my holiday bonus will come and that always perks me up a bit!

Besides my hours at work where I’m actually doing my job, we also have had many mandatory meets lately, which usually are quite boring. I guess my company never heard that there are meeting rooms from the Wrigley field rooftop club where employees can actually watch a Cubs game. Oh well, I’m not really complaining as I know many folks don’t even have employment right now (and would really like to), but it’s nice to have a blog to vent on.

With the current health care debate going through the United States congress, there is good likelihood the current system is likely to be overhauled. At the center of the debate is health insurance, which pays for medical expenses. This type of coverage at times is used more broadly to address disability or long-term nursing of various types. It is typically  offered either by the government-sponsored social insurance program such as medicare, or from private insurance providers. A company could buy its employees the coverage, on a group basis or by individual patients. In either case, there is a cost associated with receiving such care, whether it is through taxes or premiums.

The medical field has established a set criteria for evaluating the overall risk from the numerous medical conditions people have, in order to determine health care costs. There is no doubt that health is the most important aspect of our lives, it doesn’t get more logical than that. For example then, a consumer could be interested in getting san diego KaiserQuotes health insurance, so that they will have the peace of mind they are covered in case a health issue arises. Keep up with the current news and best of health to you and your loved ones.

December 8th, 2009Considering Some Travels

It’s the time of year right now where it becomes really cold around here, and I in turn start to think of travelling to some of the warmer US states, such as California, Arizona and Texas. I just can’t stand the cold weather, and so usually my family will take off to someplace warmer for at least a couple of weeks in the winter. If work isn’t too busy we might even go for three weeks to a month. Of course,  we’ll probably wait until after Christmas as the holiday season is best enjoyed at home, and while we want to go somewhere warm it also needs to be affordable and not too far away. We’ve done Los Angeles and Phoenix not too long ago, so maybe this year we will go to Gruene TX.

I have always loved Texas as the people are so friendly, and of course the weather is warmer than it is here (we’ve had minus weather everyday this week!). Gruene specifically would be a nice play to stay as they have many quaint bed and breakfasts, which is something I really enjoy. Also, Gruene is neither too big or too small, so it’ll be the perfect place to enjoy a little sunshine and relaxation.
